Purple String Campaign

Help Raise Awareness of Gender-Based Violence

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Join us in taking a stand against gender-based violence. At Atlantic Street Center (ASC), our Gender-Based Violence (GBV) team advocates for victims and survivors in finding new housing, case management, and in therapeutic resources. If you or someone you know is in need of receiving support, please learn more about our GBV team here.

We know that one campaign will not eradicate the violence that many people face, but the more we are aware of the presence of gender-based violence in our neighborhoods, the closer we get to creating a more supportive community.

What is the Purple String Campaign?

Once upon a time, before Siri reminders and smart phone calendars, people would tie strings around their finger to remind themselves of important things or appointments. Today, we are using it as a way to remind everyone about the effects of gender-based violence, as well as raise awareness about what services and resources that ASC can offer victims and survivors.

Through posts on social media throughout October of people posing with or showing off their purple strings and promoting our services, we are hoping more people will learn of the resources ASC can provide to those living in King County and North Pierce County.

How can I get involved with the Purple String Campaign?

To be a part of ASC’s Purple String Campaign, your first step is to just let us know! Please email Nora Weiss, Marketing & Communications Coordinator at noraw@atlanticstreet.org with your name and preferred mailing address. We will send you a string that you can post on social media and recommended language for your caption. When you post and tag ASC on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, we will make sure to share your picture on our platforms.

You can either tie the string to your finger or do a pose with it; it is totally up to you. We are just thankful you are willing to be a part of this small initiative to reach more people in our community that ASC may be able to help.

If you want to take a picture but do not want to post on your own accounts, feel free to email your image to noraw@atlanticstreet.org. We can share your picture directly on our social media platforms as we will be sharing any pictures we are tagged in throughout October.

What are some ways that ASC serves those impacted by gender-based violence?

We serve victims and survivors of gender-based violence (domestic violence, sexual assault, and/or commercial sexual exploitation) of King County and North Pierce County. Our GBV program provides mobile advocacy, therapeutic, and housing services in two languages (including Spanish) to assist survivors in working towards safety and stability.
